The old workshops history
The cottage has formally a craftmans workshop for the Penrhyn estate. The workshop was used to maintained farm building for the estate up until the 1950's. The original key is hanging from one of the beams in the cottage.
The Penryn Estate included Penrhyn Castle Penryhyn Quarry near Bethesda, Port Penrhyn, Penrhyn Tramway and large areas of land. In 1952, Penrhyn Castle and a substantial portion of the Penrhyn Estate were accepted by the Treasury in lieu of death duties, and vested in the National Trust, whch i when the workshop closed it's doors for the last time.
The Quarry which is visable on the other side of the valley from the workshop was once the world's largest slate quarry; the main pit is nearly 1 mile long and 1,200 feet deep, and was worked by nearly 3,000 quarrymen. The quarry was the site of two prolonged strikes by workers demanding better pay and safer conditions at eh turn of the century. The first strike lasted eleven months in 1896. The second began on 22 November 1900 and lasted for three years. Known as "The Great Strike of Penrhyn" this was the longest dispute in British industrial history.
